Siena

The train took us from Assisi to Siena. 10 May.

The square, Piazza del Campo, is the place to be in Siena. Twice a year local groups run a horse race, the Palio di Siena, around the square.

Filling up our water bottle on the square.

Other drinking fluids on the square.

These cars were driving around and then parked on the square. One had some pretty graphic exaggerated male appendages drawn on its hood.

A group singing at a restaurant.

The door into our lovely apartment.

The view from our window.

We found my kind of street, har.

There are 17 Contrada (districts) in Siena. Ten of the districts twice a year run in the Palio di Siena. The racetrack is the area around the square which is filled with dirt. The inside becomes completely and fully packed with spectators. Only a small percentage can actually see the race.

The Contrada all have there own name and mascot. They have meeting halls, small squares, museums, street lights and flags.

We stopped at a bakery.

The Fonte Serena, The Serene Fountain.
