Pompeii and Vesuvius

We signed up for a 1/2 day guided bus tour that took us to Pompeii and then to Mt. Vesuvius with a lunch stop included. Our guide was Ornella and our driver Tornino.

It was a small enough tour that we fit into a van.

An explanation of the layout of Pompeii. The grid pattern was layed out by the Greeks. We were inside for about two hours.

A courtyard. It served several uses includeing as a gladiators training area.

The large theatre

At the top of the theatre.

Chariot tracks worn into the road. The raised areas in the middle of the street are stepping stones for when the street was flooded.

A public water fountain.

A food stand. Apartments were very small and the average person would get most of his meals from places like this.

The House of Menander.

Work continues.

A bath house interior. The floors were heated.

At the brothel.

A pointer in the street to the brothel.

Original lead pipe.

The forum with Vesuvius in the background.

After lunch we were driven partway up Vesuvius and the hiked on up about another 1000ft.

We look into the caldera. The clouds forming almost looks like volcanic activity.

Looking toward Pompeii and all of the people that are living so close to the volcano.
