The Cinque Terre

From Lucca we took the train to Vernazza in the Cinque Terre. We had to change trains in La Spezia Centrale and a lot of us got off the La Spezia stop just before Centrale and it took us a while to get any information from the station personnel. We stayed in Vernazza May 15-17.

Main street of Vernazza from the train station. It took us a while to get into our room at the Vernazza Rooms and Apts. but we eventually got a code to get our key.

Linda carries my bag toward our room.

A typical stairway.

Vernazza harbor with Ristorante Bar Al Castello.

Later we have a nice meal at the Ristorante Bar Al Castello.

A nice picture from the Castle.

We have a drink on the Piazza Marconi facing the harbor.

We discover the tineist bar just off the Piazza. It was Wednesday and they made martini's. Linda is talking to another couple that we ran into several more times on the trails.

We have breakfast to start our day.

The cemetaries have the best view of the town below.

We had to get a photo.

We hit the trail. We took the train to Corniglia and started on the trail to Manarola. Linda took a shortcut from Volastra (a bus) as some people we met said the trail ahead was really difficult. Not so, it was the easiest section. I wonder what the people we met thought of the rest of the trail. After several texts and wrong turns in Manarola we got back together.

The trail is crossed by one of the tracks used to move vineyard workers.

The trail along the sea is closed. From the ferry we could see sections completely removed by landslides.

Manarola in the distance.

We had a nice meal along the Manarola main drag.

We had seen a Rick Steve's video recommending anchovies in the Cinque Terre. I found them to be ok, not a taste I was used to. I could see getting to really like them after a while. Five were cooked in olive oil and the other 5 were salted.

Looking back to Corniglia.

Monterosso. We rode the train to Monterosso and walked the trail back to Vernazza. It was about a three hour hike.
